Highest Paid Musicians 2015

Highest Paid Musicians 2015

I recently read a list of the highest paid musicians of 2015 and I was pleasantly surprised. Do You want to know who topped the list? None other than Katy Perry.

Amongst the list were Taylor Swift and Justin Timberlake and One direction. Katy Perry topping the most grossed because of her huge touring schedule and grossing quite a substantial amount per tour.

I thought for people like Adele, Justin Bieber and Beyonce would be up there on the top 10 but seems like they didn’t make the cut. It goes to show that the music industry is often unpredictable.

Here are the top ten grossing musicians of 2015:

1. Katy Perry – $135 million
2. One Direction – $130 million
3. Garth Brooks – $90 million
4. Taylor Swift – $80 million
5. The Eagles – $73.5 million
6. Calvin Harris – $66 million
7. Justin Timberlake – $63.5 million
8. Diddy – $60 million
9. Fleetwood Mac – $59.5 million
10. Lady Gaga – $59 million

I think the highlight of this list is seeing Calvin harris on this list, even though he has been featuring a lot of well-known artists on his songs, it’s great to see a Dj on a list of really well-known artists.

I know 2016 is going to throw us some surprises and I cannot wait to see who will be on this list next.

Bill Murray

Bill Murray

You may know him from Ghostbusters, Space Jam, Life Aquatic and many more great films but this actor has and will be one of my favourites.

His full name is Willam James Bill Murray born September 21, 1950. It was intriguing to me how growing up I loved the films he starred in but I never knew his name or never really acknowledge him in a film. Films like Ghostbusters, Space jam, Osmosis Jones and many more, where just a few highlights of the films I watched growing up.

Bill Murray even though he is an under-acknowledged actor still manages to attract a massive fan base. It’s almost like he has a cult following. It goes as far as having Bill Murray conventions to honour the work that he has done in the film industry.

I have to say one of my favourite pieces of work starring Bill Murray would have to be Fantastic Mr Fox, where he plays the badger in the film which wasn’t a main role in the film but still a standout.

Wes Anderson films often feature Bill in them, whether it’s a lead role or supporting. Both Bill Murray and Wes Anderson work well together it’s almost like paint to a canvas. It’s always artistic when they work together.

Long live Bill Murray.

Hustlers Ambition

Hustlers Ambition

I recently met a guy named Joseph, I met him because he was the guy guarding my car on the street. He walked to towards me as I walked towards my car. For some reason, I wanted it to get to get to know him.

I found out his name is Joseph, he has a wife and kids and has been hustling on the streets to feed his family. Talking to Joseph more, he began to tell me his dreams.

Here stood a guy, who could have been happy with the street hustle but yet he still chooses to hold onto his dreams. He began to tell me how he wants to buy a house for his wife and kids so they can be safe.

Sometimes we may or may not remember the dreams and desires in our heart but just like Joseph we kind secretly hope it come true. Hold on to those dreams, cherish them and always aim for something better.

After I spoke to him I prayed for Joseph and off he ran to the next car. Funny thing is Joseph will probably never remember that conversation but what he will never forget is his desire to dream bigger.

Dream big and never give up.

29 to life

29 to life

You ever wonder how people live on the streets? Listen to this.

I recently met a guy in passing on my way to a local bar. For some reason, we began to converse with him and one thing leads to the next and he started beatboxing. I couldn’t believe it because this dude was crazy good.

He told us his name was Ricardo, he carried a huge sack with all his belongings in it. He didn’t look dangerous just interesting. After he had finished beat boxing, he began to tell us about his story.

He said that he had been living on the street for 29 years. He was born in Kimberly, he left home and has been homeless and without parents for 29 years. To be honest, I didn’t really believe him because that is a long time to be stranded on the streets and yet he looked so level headed.

He then also told us how he just got out of jail where he spent 20 days because he was wrongly accused of having heroin. It seemed like there was no luck for this.

You know all three of us walked away kinda shocked but also acknowledging that there are still some good hustlers out there. It was crazy to me that in the culture we live in a person like Ricardo would make people like us, people who do not lack, he would make us think about life and its twists and turns.

Ricardo taught me one thing that day. No matter what happens, keep your head up.

Hey Drunk Girls

Why do girls have to impress a man or men?

I recently found myself asking this when hanging out with one of the friends at one of the local pubs. It was interesting to me that women of all types, sizes, colours were all doing the same thing. Trying to impress the guy from across the room.

I then asked myself, “why?” Because I was really confused. Beautiful girls who treat themselves like trash to seek approval from others, namely men. Don’t get me wrong this isn’t a blog putting women down but more to help you realise that your worth is far more than you give yourself.

You dress up, make sure your makeup is perfect only to get hammered drunk and wake up the next morning with no recollection except for a massive headache and a heart which is still empty.

I wish I could tell you all your worth, but it isn’t that simple. Self-worth is not an external decision but more an internal decision with an external outcome. The way you portray yourself is the reflection of what is happening on the inside.

You are more than the world wants you to be, you are more than any guy perceives you to be, you are a princess, Respect yourself so he can respect you.

Hey, drunk girls, you are loved.

King Kendrick

At first, I was against Kendrick but spending more time listening to his music and getting to know his life. I was proven wrong. He is actually quite a killer rapper, writer and musician.

Kendrick recently at the 58th annual Grammy awards, was nominated 11 times, way ahead of Taylor Swift and The Weeknd. It was fascinating to me how Kendrick, a guy who was known for his diss track and not making too many friends, was and is still on top of the rap game.

I began to look into Kendrick, his albums, writing style, music sense and began to realise that he is one talented dude.

Albums like “To pimp a butterfly” and “Overly Dedicated.” made me re-think the way I look at rap. It was crazy that one guy could create such pioneering music, especially rap music. It was almost like listening to Kanye’s College drop out an album and remembering how my mind was blown with what creative madness it was.

There were a few life lessons I actually took away from reading into Kendrick’s life.

1. Never underestimate

I found myself writing Kendrick off because in my opinion he wasn’t as good as rappers of the past or current well-known rappers, but as he grew my interest grew and listening to him more, I can say he is really good.

2. Keep an open mind

I was so consumed by my preference of rap music that I totally forgot to expand my mind and listen to new artists. Always keep an open mind, even if you hate it there is always something to learn.
Keep learning, Keep creating, Can’t stop. Won’t stop.

What are you wearing?

What are you wearing?

We live in a city driven by fashion, the latest trends, the latest looks, who is  wearing what. We have to look our best where ever and when ever.

I noticed this the other day, when taking a stroll down the street and I began to people watch(haha). I started noticing how in a crowd of thousand’s everyone was wearing something fresh and new. In a way it was kind of awesome.

Brands like Nike, Adidas, vans are always some of the main features but recently, I have been noticing that people have been wearing some really awesome international brands like Palace clothing, Only clothing and some more new york type style clothing.

I love that our city is trendy and trending, I love that we break the stereotypical view on how Africa or South Africa should look and the funny thing is, the people have gotten friendlier. You would think in a city or nation surrounded by status and trends people would become more exclusive.

I discovered this when I got to chatting with a guy, who seemed pretty popular in the fashion industry, at first glance he looked as if he wanted nothing to do with anything or anyone (haha).

When I began to get to know him, he turned out to be a great guy. My whole mindset of what fashion should be or how we should look changed. It made me realise that it’s not about what I’m wearing but more about who I’m representing.

We can wear the most expensive brands, the most exclusive brands In the world but if you’re not happy or welcoming to people, then you just wearing really expensive material.

I think in a way your clothing has the ability to portray a message. You can speak without even speaking. Be inclusive even if your clothes are exclusive. Stand for our community, togetherness and for fashion.

“If you stand for nothing, you will fall for everything”

Be trendy, Be happy and never forget about people.

Britain’s Got Talent

0

I recently resurrected my love for British hip hop, I forgot how much I love it. It’s one of the most unheard, unseen forms of hip hop but, to be honest, it’s one of the most “hype” type of music ever. It literally makes you want to want to move, maybe even dance a little.

So to start re-kindling my interest in British hip hop I started listening to Skepta and a new guy called Stormzy, its was crazy to me how simple their music is yet everyone seems to be playing them.

I recently went to a local pub and all they were playing was underground British hip hop and every person knew each one of the songs with the lyrics. Honestly, I sat there shocked, how times and people have changed, when I started listening to British hip-hop people thought I was crazy, now it’s the trending choice of music.

With the dirty beats, hard synths and the British accents, English hip hop is soon going to take over every club and pub. It’s almost too catchy to not listen to. If you can get past the fast pace of the lyrics and the cuss words, British hip hop is beginning to look like a new trend in our city.

People like Stormzy, still releasing some music on sound cloud but still crushing all areas of music. Me being a songwriter also a musician I can appreciate it when artists pursue their dreams. I do realise that hip-hop, in general, is not everyone’s style or type or music but the type of music wouldn’t matter if we can appreciate the creativity behind the music.

Be different, try something new, re-ignite and pursue your dreams.

Half-way Crook

1

On one of my recent adventures I discovered that people are often opinionated even when it doesn’t concern them. I never really noticed it until that day.

We were out chatting to people at one of our local trendy spots we go to in Cape Town and by the end of the night before leaving I met a guy who was pretty over the limit. He asked me what we were about to do next and I began to tell him that we were going home because we had to be at church the next day. He immediately wanted to come and it was different to me that I didn’t even have to fight or challenge him, I simply mentioned it and he was into it.

His friend was standing at a distance and over heard me inviting him to church and immediately began challenging my invitation with some pretty colourful language. He began to equate his past experiences to his current situation, He then called me a half way crook. Ha. I don’t even know what that is?! So I tried to figure out his thought process. First, I tried to understand what that even meant but eventually I got it. He was calling me a half-hearted Christian, when I got it I began to think how messed up some people’s mind-sets are about Christians.

I could see that this argument was not going to go anywhere because we ended up on the street and he was still cussing us out. It took a lot to see the good in people that night.

We live in this culture where music, trends, people, places continually fight against the truth, the truth that everyone is longing for identity and everyone is longing to be fulfilled. You see it’s not that they are too scared to admit it, it’s that they are too scared to let go.

The truth hurts.

Dude, where’s my car?

0

Our City loves the finer things in life. We are so spoilt for choice with breath-taking wine estates and crisp local beer joints with trendy spots and trendy people, but sometimes that becomes an excuse or a crutch.

We recently came across a guy who was pretty wasted to say the least. Our first encounter with him was when he stumbled over onto our table making whale sounds to an old-school hip hop song, it was pretty entertaining.

He then disappeared and got kicked out of the bar multiple times. When we were leaving we saw him trying to open a car door. So we asked if he needed some help. The funny thing is that it wasn’t his car! We spent half an hour looking for this dude’s car until we ended up at a little corner store where we made him down a Coca Cola to sober up.

He started telling us how he lives in Gordons Bay and he’s driving home tonight but he can’t find his car. For those of you who don’t know where Gordons Bay is, it’s about an hour and a half away from where we were. What?!!!

I began to think about the society that we live in and we really do enjoy good clothing, a great location, great food and great drinks but yet we abuse it by over indulging. I told a friend once that the abuse of something good produces bad decisions. Simply meaning that no matter how good the place, the people, the food or the drinks, it takes one person to abuse it which turns into bad decisions.

Our City is so diverse and we’re so spoilt for choice. The originality of our culture makes us as a City and Country, unique.

So if you decide to head out to have some fun, don’t be the guy who loses his car!!

You determine the atmosphere around you.
