Barack Obama – The Farewell of the Century

0

For some, it maybe difficult to stomach that the White House will soon have a different inhabitant.

This transition is possibly even harder after Barack Obama’s outstanding farewell address on 10 January 2017 –  in Chicago, where his career took off. It is also where he met his wife, Michelle. It would also be the place where he announced his candidacy for president all those years ago.

And after two successful terms in office, the outgoing POTUS (President of The United States) proved why the world fell in love with him during his farewell address.

Ending it off with the statement “Yes we did”, a follow-on from the battle cry of his victory speech in 2008 – “Yes we can”.

In his address, Obama dealt with the underpinning values of democracy and the threats to freedom.

He reminded people about the value of economic freedom and opportunity, while cautioning the Americans never to take it for granted.

At one point, when he began to discuss the preparations for President-elect Trump to take office, he reminded the crowds that it was the successful transition of power that made America stand-out once again. Calming the jeers and shouts of “boo” at the mention of Trump, Obama was a gentleman in reminding Chicago that then President George Bush had been gracious in preparing the way for him. He would return the favour.

His speech will no doubt go down as one of his finest – ever.

It should be recorded as the farewell of the century.

Even with his record, remaining gracious and humble above all.

He took a moment to acknowledge his “best friend” Michelle and his “brother” Vice-President Joe Biden for their support and dedication to his cause.

It is worth watching in full:

Donald Glover – man of the moment

The recent Golden Globes award ceremony was everything you can expect of an event of that nature.

High caliber actors, film makers, musicians, among other Hollywood royalty were all present.

Except this time, the King of Show was none other than, Donald Glover.

Glover, known to many as Childish Gambino took center stage after his show Atlanta FX was awarded the Best TV series, comedy or musical.

In December last year, Glover also won big at the Critic’s Choice Awards when he won Best Actor in a Comedy Series.

As if winning wasn’t enough, Glover added some spice in his Golden Globes acceptance speech.

Dressed in a brown suede suit, he thanked the fans for loving his show.

He also acknowledged the role that the people of Atlanta played in influencing the production.

Glover went on to make a remark that broke the internet, a few moments later.

In what seemed to be a very random remark, Glover went on to thank the Migos – an Atlanta-based music group – “not for being in the show but for making ‘Bad and Boujee’. That’s the best song ever…”

The remark was followed by a few chuckles in the audience.

And a day later, Bad and Boujee was the number 1 song in the United States – talk about influence.

At a press conference after the Award Ceremony, Glover was asked why he had given the Migos that shout out:

“Because I think they’re the Beetles of this generation and they don’t get a lot of respect…I think outside of Atlanta”

Glover or Gambino in this instance has also recently released a soul album – Awaken My Love.

It seems a lot is happening around Glover at the moment and people are loving it.

From Chance The Rapper’s Instagram feed, it seems we can also look forward to the promised, much-anticipated mixtape from himself and Gambino. The two last worked together on Gambino’s 2013 album – Because The Internet.

And a few days after Chance’s Instagram, Hypebeast Music seemed to suggest that Gambino will also be releasing a track with the Migos in the near future.

This guy is nothing short of genius. We can’t wait to see all he will deliver in 2017.

The Trump days ahead

0

In a week the world will have a new leader – President-elect Donald Trump.

The Financial Times named him their Person of the Year for 2016 because: “He rewrote the rules of US politics. Now the deal-making president will show whether his promises were simply opening bids”.

A powerful statement. To re-write a system that is centuries old is no small feat.

But the critical question now is: can he deliver?

During his campaign, Trump made some extraordinary and in some instances, outrageous promises.

After winning, he went on to nominate some very controversial candidates for his cabinet.

And soon the work will begin.

As always the first 100 days will be crucial.

All eyes will be on the US to see if they survive a Trump presidency.

His attitude towards international relations and other world superpowers will also be in the spotlight.

Whether you like him or not, this is where we find ourselves.

And in a week’s time, we will watch his inauguration, where every word of his speech will be unpacked, scrutinised and interrogated.

There will be no, “yes we can”¸ but there will be a Trump.

For now, all we can do is wait.

The Obama Legacy

0

During every significant transition in life, it is hard not to become nostalgic and reflective. And Barack Obama’s imminent exit from the White House is no different.

For the last eight years Obama has been the leader of the free world.

Being the first black American President in history, his name will forever be etched in our history books.

But I am sure Obama will want to be remembered for more than just being the first black US president.

Looking in from the outside, I think the Obamas gave the White House a face lift – not literally of course.

But they changed the way we viewed the first family and ultimately Barack’s presidency.

They made it more “human”, but not just human, they gave it a friendly face.

Often the US has asserted its authority in ways that were not always popular.

But Obama’s approach seems to have been one of extending a friendly hand, building bridges, promoting a society that tolerated and even celebrated the individual’s rights and their choices.

While his presidency faced some of the most difficult challenges in dealing with race relations in the US and the #BlackLives versus #AllLives movements – Obama has maintained a firm, but gentle hand, at the same time, in dealing with the sensitive subject.

At one time he would give a stern speech about the shocking gun laws that enable unfit individuals to acquire arms and a few moments later the same man would be singing in a “black church” while delivering a eulogy.

Obama’s presidency should remind us all that it is possible to have a level-headed individual ascend the highest office – and make adult decisions in the interests of advancing the greater good.

Was it perfect?

Obviously not – it will never be. But that is the space in which we operate – humanity. We will always fall short of the standard, because of our nature.

And the political playing field makes it even trickier.
What Obama has done, is successfully dispelled the notion that power is a matter of force.

He has proven that influence can be achieved by walking a different path.

That dialogue is much better than conflict.

While that may have made him unpopular among the populists, I think he has not worried about them too much – the world needs less of them anyway.

Pharrell’s “Hidden Figures” Premieres

Creative genius, Pharrell Williams’ film Hidden Figures will premiere tonight.

Late last year, Williams spoke to The Breakfast Club about the project and how inspired he was to be a part of it.

Hidden Figures is about the untold story of three African-American women – Katherine G. Johnson (Taraji P. Henson), Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer) and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monáe) – working at NASA, who served as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in history: the launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit.

The film is set in the 1960’s in his home state of Virginia.

Apart from the massive undertaking of trying to send a man into space, they also have to navigate the racism and sexism of the time. Which in many ways persists ’till today.

If the trailer is anything to go by, the movie is set to be a hit.

And if Pharrell Williams is excited about it, you best believe it will be fire.

Apart from the movie, Williams spends some time talking about US politics – why Donald Trump won, why he endorsed Hilary Clinton and issues of race relations.

Williams also takes a swipe at the music industry for “enslaving” artists for a very long time.

In his opinion, the artists and not the record labels, should be in control of how their music is distributed.

Bieber back in Africa

The good news for some is that we are leaving 2016 behind.

And the even better news for others is that Justin Bieber will be back in South Africa in 2017.

Promoters announced Bieber’s return to Africa as part of his Purpose World Tour earlier this month.

Bieber is set to perform in May 2017 in Johannesburg and Cape Town respectively.

The New Year is already brining gifts for some.

The superstar was last in South Africa three years ago while on the Believe Tour.

And a lot has happened since then.

Apart from the run-ins with the law, Bieber has fallen out with fans at some venues – such as the gig in Manchester in the United Kingdom where he decided to storm off stage after fans would not listen to his pleas for them to stop screaming while he was trying to perform.

Slightly unreasonable request, since it’s a… you know, pop music concert.

Anyhow, I am sure African fans will show Bieber some love.

Once thing he has managed to do, despite killing his Instagram account and possibly alienating fans, is keep a massive following. Because whether we like it or not, the man is talented and an incredible performer.

Something to look forward to this time round is that Bieber’s concert merchandise is actually worth wearing. Designed by Fear of God founder Jerry Lorenzo, Bieber’s Purpose merchandise is absolutely brilliant.

Once hopes the same merchandise is brought for the South African fans – at reasonable prices.

All the best to the Bieber fans.

I have no doubt concerts will be sold out and some people will be camping outside hotels and concert venues can be expected.

The HB 2016 honour’s list

Hypebeast recently released its much-anticipated list – HB100.

According the publication, HB100 is about “the innovators from all realms of creativity in the spotlight”.

While some of the names are no surprise, like Pharrell Williams, Rhianna and Drake, it is fantastic to see some of the anomalies that have recently made waves in the creative and fashion industry breaking through and earning their spot in the limelight.

This includes the founder and creative director of the Fear of God (FOG) brand, Jerry Lorenzo and the founder and director of the Off White™ clothing line Virgil Abloh.

Oh and of course, Kanye West is up there too, because you know…

Both Jerry and Virgil are actually very connected in a way.

Together with West, the three collaborated – at some stage – in the creative processes along their respective journeys.

And it seems for all three of the gentlemen, the fruits are beginning to show.

The HB100 page describes Jerry Lorenzo:

First debuting in streetwear in 2012, nobody expected Jerry Lorenzo, a dad with no formal fashion training, to have crafted a brand by 2016 that counts the likes of Justin Bieber, Kanye West and Kendall Jenner amongst its fans. This year was just the latest in the meteoric rise of Lorenzo’s label, Fear of God, which saw collaborations with mastermind JAPAN, Vans and SSENSE. Meanwhile, Lorenzo’s collaborative F.O.G. diffusion label with PacSun continued to put out collection after covetable collection aimed at a younger audience. What made the biggest waves, however, was Lorenzo’s designs for Justin Bieber’s Purpose tour merchandise that sold out instantly at a series of pop-up stores held nationwide in the U.S. Not to mention the surging popularity of his military-inspired sneaker boot released towards the end of last year, which quickly gained traction through recent months to become one of the most hyped silhouettes in the sneakerhead community. Whatever Lorenzo has up his sleeve for the coming year, you can count on it to have ample viral potential given the designer’s deft understanding of the current pop cultural climate.

Abloh, the son of Nigerian immigrants, who is basically a creative genius in his own right is described:

From his inaugural men’s runway show back in February through to dropping his own 19-piece capsule collection on MATCHESFASHION.COM in October, Virgil Abloh has been one of 2016’s biggest movers in the world of menswear. His label OFF-WHITE is one of fashion’s most sought-after, blending streetwear staples with a high-end aesthetic and his coterie of friends in high places has sent his brand’s cache skywards. The music producer, art director and long-term Kanye collaborator has proven his eye for fashion time and time again this year, culminating in a 2016 fall/winter drop that included distressed leather jackets, camo-print coats, graphic tees, sweatpants, backpacks, caps and footwear options. On top of this, Abloh’s list of collaborations continued with an 11-piece collection for Levi’s Made & Crafted that reaffirmed his desire to evolve. Having achieved so much throughout 2016, next year has a lot to live up to.

Another anomaly who sneaked his way into the list is the young rapper/musician/creative director and general “mad man”, Tyler the Creator.

Tyler was initially famous for his involvement in the music group, Odd Future.

He is also the champion of his clothing line GOLF.

In an interview earlier this year, Tyler described the reason for the name “GOLF” as a clothing brand:

“It just looked cool on a t-shirt”.

Truly profound (ha!)

HB100 describes him:

2016 has been Tyler, the Creator’s most diversified year thus far. Musical highlights include his and A$AP Rocky’s remix of Kanye West’s The Life of Pablo cut “Freestyle 4,” a hilarious remix of Zayn Malik’s smash hit, “Pillowtalk,” as well as a solo record titled “My Ego.” The Odd Future leader hosted his fifth annual Camp Flog Gnaw carnival with an impressive lineup featuring the likes of Kanye West, A$AP Rocky, Pharrell and more. Outside of music, Tyler was more active than ever: he debuted his first-ever fashion show for his Golf Wang brand in June, is getting his own show on VICELAND, penned a powerful poem titled “Tricolor” from Frank Ocean’s Boys Don’t Cry magazine, and even shot Kanye West’s unofficial Rolling Stone cover. So many opportunities arrived that he even changed his infamous @fucktyler Twitter handle to the more formalized @tylerthecreator.

Check out the rest of the list where you can view each profile. It makes for interesting reading. It also makes one excited for the future and what we can expect in the creative industry. The HB100 full list here.

Review – Designated Survivor

It’s not every day that we are given a political series where the President of the United States of America is not “ambitious” in the way we are used to.

But the makers of Designated Survivor seem to be pulling it off extremely well.

The drama is another series focused on the everyday life of politics in Washington – the White House and Capitol Hill – but with a major twist.

White House protocol states that during the US President’s State of the Union Address, he or she should select one member of Cabinet (ministers) to remain in a secure room, just in case anything happens to destroy the government.

In this instance, the “designated survivor”, as they are known, is Tom Kirkman – the Secretary of Housing who is not overly ambitious for political power.

Instead, Kirkman, played by the brilliant Kiefer Sutherland, believes he can bring real change to Washington while serving his constituents.

What Kirkman doesn’t know is that on the day of the State of Union, his life, along with his family would be dramatically changed, after the whole government is executed in a bomb attack.

The eventuality that the “designated survivor” protocol prepares for, actually takes place.

And Kirkman moves from just being the Housing Secretary, a low-level Cabinet post, to being the most powerful man on the planet overnight.

His major challenge – is that no one believes in him, including those in his office.

Not only is he faced with the challenge of convincing those who serve him that he is up for the task of rebuilding the US government, but he has to take 300 million Americans on the journey with him.

As if that is not enough trouble, Kirkman navigates the difficulty of trying to convince seasoned politicians from other states that he can truly deliver.

While the drama is typically American – everything is massive, a world disaster if they don’t get it right – it keeps you locked in because the storyline is so different.

It’s also full of “cliff hangers” because it is only available for download/viewing one episode at a time – every Thursday evening (US Time).

The president is put of his depth, nervous and really longs for simpler times.

Designated Survivor is available on Netflix, check it out, it’s worth it.

Review – The Crown

0

If you appreciate history, especially anything related to the British monarchy, The Crown is for you.

The Netflix show is simply brilliant – worth more than the 5 stars it currently possesses.

So far, season 1 has delivered ten episodes of nothing but intrigue, brilliant oratory, and an incredibly accurate portrayal of the inside drama of what it truly means to be a British royal.

It sets out to depict the life of the royal family shortly before the death of the then King George VI.

King George was propelled into power after his brother King Edward VIII (known to his family as David) abdicated, choosing “love”, as he would put it, before what was seen as his royal duty.

King George’s death meant that a young princess Elizabeth, on official assignment in Kenya – accompanied by her husband, prince Phillip – ascended the throne, at a moment’s notice.

It’s the kind of drama that in some instances leaves a lump in your throat as you observe the wrestle of trying to lead a “normal life”, yet it is not possible.

The new queen cannot just take the kids for a walk, or help them with their homework – in fact, she is hardly pictured doing anything with her kids throughout the first season, except when they follow her around the house in awe of the new crown she practices to wear before her coronation.

If anything, the show is incredible in portraying what most of us would view as “the other side of the curtain”.

It brings a humanness to the people millions observe as “the elite”.

It is an outstanding insight into British tradition. And very importantly, it gives a glimpse into how the rest of the Commonwealth – much of the world really – was influenced by a small island.

If you’re looking for something to watch over the next few weeks, this is the show for you.

Rhianna wins ‘Shoe Oscar’

0

One of this year’s most memorable moments will be the 2016 Footwear News Achievement Awards.

These are basically the “shoe oscars” – instead of actors, you have shoes and their designers/ambassadors up for awards.

While the event is widely recognised by sneaker (shoe) heads, it gained massive attention last year, when Kanye West’s YeezyBoost 350 in collaboration with Adidas, took the “Shoe of the Year” award.

That led to the release of “Facts” where he talked about “jumping over jumpman” – beating Michael Jordan’s iconic Jordans for the award. It was also significant because Jordans are a Nike production.

Instead of Nike or Adidas, this year Puma snatched the prestigious title.

Barbados born music superstar Rhianna’s Fenty Pumas were the most sought after shoe of the year – which is what the award celebrates.

In the recent award ceremony, the superstar – who was also the first woman to ever win the award – was clearly humbled by the accolade:

“This is such a big deal for me. It means so much. I’m so proud to be a woman, to be a young woman from Barbados. To come to America and just do this by default because I liked to wear a certain style of shoe… I wanted (the Creepers) to be the first thing that people saw because it was what I was into at the time. I didn’t really expect people to love it the way I do and the way they supported it means so much to me. All the Creeper heads and all the kids in the street inspired me just by doing things their own way.”
