Don and Maxine Simpson, a couple from Bakersfield, California, married a year after meeting in 1952, and their love story carried on for 62 years. The husband and wife duo rarely spent time apart. The end of both spouses’ lives was no exception.

Maxine had been battling cancer all year, and Don had broken his hip two weeks prior to his passing. The Simpsons leave behind two children and multiple grandchildren.

I thought this is a beautiful love story. From the time they met, getting married and growing old together. I may not have known them personally but just reading about them made me think and conclude that their love was an unselfish kind of love which was the “glue” that holds marriages together. In marriage, they probably subdued their own egos and selfish pride for the sake of the family.

Look, I’ve never been married before nor do I know anything about marriage, but I often hear that the excitement and romantic feelings of a new relationship fade in time, and the husband and wife will begin to see and resent each other’s faults… (Kind of scary to me). That is when true “Christian Love” (kindness, respect, benevolence) must take over. True Christian love is not a feeling; it is something we must make the effort to practice every day. Paul states it most very well in the Bible when he says, “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonour others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres”. (1 Corinthians 13:4–7). Makes sense right?

Here’s a video about Don and Maxine.

Don and Maxine Simpson’s ability to love each other, and that fact that only death separated them sounds like a story taken from a romantic movie, but it’s not. Till death do us part: a true love story that was blessed by God.
